Cosmetic Dermatology for Men

Our approach to a strong and distinguished aesthetic.

We are seeing a significant shift away from the traditional gender dichotomy of professional skincare, with more men turning to cosmetic products and treatments. In fact, more than 15 percent of our patients are male.

Fundamentally, skincare best practices and cosmetic treatments are the same for men and women — what differs is the patient. Some want to enhance their masculine features, others are looking to regain a youthful sense of strength and confidence in the workplace or discuss early signs of aging. A dermatologist team with experience and expertise in male aesthetics and anatomy can help address these concerns and bring changes to life, ensuring they look natural.

Prejuvenation

Your 20s and 30s

Many men don’t give their skin much consideration until they are dealing with the physical signs of aging, such as wrinkles or sunspots. Some, on the other hand, are more proactive, and consider treatments and products that can benefit them before sun damage and signs of aging set in.

In your 20s and 30s, we work with you to take a preventative approach to aging, discuss any areas you want to focus on, and create habits of self care. Time is still on your side, so the approach to cosmetic treatments can be both preventative and corrective. We’ll help you understand your skin, establish intervals of visits for conservative treatments, and create a plan that sets you up for long-term success.

Modern Maintenance

Your 40s and 50s

As you get into your 40s and 50s, you may start to experience dull skin, wrinkles, facial folds, and sagging. This is when we may see signs of early pigmentation and rosacea as well. They each have several contributing factors, ranging from inadequate skincare to lifestyle issues, like high stress or a poor diet. Of course age is one of the primary causes, resulting in the loss of collagen and elasticity in the skin.

If you don’t want to live with that expression staring back at you in the mirror, a combination of treatments can help. Along with a customized skincare regimen, gentle laser procedures or photorejuvenation can help to decrease hyperpigmentation, sunspots and large pores, and target the surface of the skin, replacing the visible dermal layer with healthier, younger looking skin. Neuromodulators temporarily relax the muscle contractions in the face that form frown lines, crow’s feet, or forehead lines, smoothing the skin. Our approach is to recommend treatments that have short-term impact and long-term benefits.

Dissatisfaction with general facial shape is another common complaint we hear among male patients. While everyone is different, there are certain indisputable features that make men classically handsome and distinguished. The jawline, cheeks, nose, and brows often come to mind. You may also want to tackle signs of tiredness, like undereye hollows. Conservative hyaluronic acid fillers can restore volume in targeted areas to enhance facial features in a subtle and natural looking way.

Advanced Approach

Your 60s and Beyond

In your 60s, the effects of improper sun protection appear in greater magnitude. In many cases, our patients are seeking a corrective solution for sunspots and other sun damage that has already appeared. For men, wrinkles are typically deepest and most concentrated on the forehead. You may also see more redness or dilated blood vessels on the skin, ranging from broken capillaries to rosacea.

Facial fat loss and boney remodeling can lead to an aged and hollow look. Men tend to have a leaner overall body composition, making them particularly susceptible to hollow cheeks as they age. Traditional solutions have always involved surgery, but there are many non-invasive treatments available today that can help.

During this period, we may increase treatment frequency or simply use different combinations to target multiple goals at once. As with modern maintenance, this includes skin-tightening, rejuvenating, and complexion-focused treatments, along with a solid foundation of evidence-based skincare.

Treating men’s skin requires a special approach to achieve results that are desirable yet subtle. We’ll listen carefully and work closely with you to ensure every consultation, treatment, and at-home regimen is customized to you.
